Dew liked the feeling of Stetson’s fingers intertwining with hers. She’d had a boyfriend or two, nothing very serious, and with both of them, there’d been awkwardness whenever she tried to hold their hands. It was like their fingers didn’t match up, and adjustment had been necessary.

It was always Dew who had to adjust her position.

Stetson’s fingers moved against hers, and she realized they were both making it work. Together.

It felt right.

As if he could sense what she was thinking, Stetson looked down at her. The corner of his mouth quirked up in the tiniest of grins. Her stomach gave a roller coaster whoop of excitement.

She’d lived twenty-four years as a virgin. She was choosy, and she was a little shy. She didn’t feel aroused by guys she’d just met. But one smile from this guy, and she was ready to take off her clothes. It hardly seemed fair, when neither Noah nor Ronan had moved her heart or libido, and the two of them had been nothing but sweet. They hadn’t jerked her around, they hadn’t twisted her emotions.

Oh, no—was she the kind of woman who needed a bad boy in order to feel turned on? Or perhaps worse, she wanted a guy who didn’t know how to share his emotions? Closed-off, secretive? She didn’t want that. She’d seen how it worked for her friends during college—never well. In movies, yeah, the sexy, emotionally-stunted bad boy was always misunderstood and ready to be “changed” by the right woman. But in real life, the sexy bad boy was always a huge mistake.

“You’re thinking hard,” Stetson said as they reached his van.

“Yeah? How do you know?”

It was difficult to make out his handsome features in the darkness and in the extra shadow of his hat brim. But his grin was still there. “It’s in your eyebrows,” he said.

“My eyebrows?”

“They give everything away. When you’re angry. When you’re relaxed. When you’re focused on something or thinking hard.”

He was probably right. “What’s your tell?” she asked.

His smile grew, and her heart caught mid-beat. This man was breathtakingly gorgeous when he smiled.

“If I tell you my tell, it’ll defeat my sexy air of mystery.”

“Oh, please,” she groaned, wishing she’d never said that to him.

He opened the van door and Dew climbed inside. He followed her, and he felt so much closer to her now that they were in a small space. The coffee and almond scent surrounded her even more than usual.

“Have you been warm enough in here?” he asked.

“It’s a little cold, but I’m sleeping okay under tons of blankets.”

He frowned, clearly not liking that answer, but it was the truth. “I’ll see if I can find a space heater—”

“And put it where? That sounds like an invitation for a fire. I’m truly fine.”

“If you say so, darlin’.”

A zing of pleasure went through her at the endearment. She liked the man’s slow, raspy drawl.

Once the door was closed behind him, she watched to see what he would do next. He’d invited her here. To show her something.
